1969 - James Earl Ray pled guilty in Memphis, TN, to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray later repudiated the guilty plea and maintained his innocence until his death in April of 1998.

1971 - Joe Frazier, of Philadelphia, won a boxing decision over Muhammad Ali who had been previously undefeated. The fight itself became something of a symbol of the country. Leading up to the fight, Ali (who had denounced the Vietnam War) had refused induction into the U.S. Army in 1967, leading to his being stripped of his title and barred from fighting, losing 3 1/2 years from the prime of his career. 1987 - Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight titleholder when he beat James Smith in a decision during a 12-round fight in Las Vegas, NV.

1904 - Theodor Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of such beloved children's books as ‘The Cat in the Hat’ (1957) and ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ (1960), is born in Springfield, Massachusetts. 1994 -  Nirvana played their final ever concert when they appeared at The Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany. The 3,000 capacity venue was a small Airport Hanger. The power went off during the show so they played an impromptu acoustic set including a version of The Cars 'My Best Friend's Girl.'

1970 - Led Zeppelin performed a concert in Copenhagen under the alias NOBS to avoid legal action from Eva Von Zeppelin, a member of the airship family.

1979 - Soul singer Donny Hathaway died after jumping, (or falling) from a 15th floor hotel room in New York City at the age of 34.
