Attention To Detail: The Work Jacket

Posted by 2 on

For any of you with a keen eye you might have noticed we are partial to a work Jacket at Number Six. Now I can think of many things to thank the French for like French bread, the 1998 world cup winning squad and mime artists, however Work Jackets have to top that list.

The History:

Originating in France, the work jacket was a staple of the French countryside. The most well known form of the work jacket is the "Bleu de Travail" jacket, this is the iconic jacket with heavy indigo dye. This jacket became prominent in France and throughout Europe in the 19th century during the industrial revolution. The blue jacket was prominent amongst manual workers and used to differentiate between workers and their boss. The name "Bleu de Travail" translates to blue for work. [caption id="attachment_6347" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Le Laboureur Moleskin Work Jacket (Ecru)[/caption] The French can even be safe in the knowledge that they were the true originators in denim. Despite denim being invented in America much of it's creation is owed to the traditional French workwear of the Industrial revolution. The first jeans put into production in America used a tough cotton fabric called "Serge de Nimes" this is the same fabric used in traditional Bleu de Travail jackets. The word denim actually takes it's name from the "De Nimes" fabric name. Hailing from masters of French work wear, the Le Laboureur Moleskin Work Jacket in Ecru is a summer jacket that does all the talking. Casual or dressed up it's a winner and it's got a pretty snazzy label for those with an eye for detail. In our search for the perfect work jacket over the years we have travelled high and low, near and far. Stumbling on vintage gems, modern remakes and traditional family run manufacturers. We think we've earned our stripes and gone the extra mile. It is in this knowledge we are lucky to present to you some of our latest finds on offer at Number Six and present what we feel to be the perfect work jacket. Side opening pockets add a design quirk to cater for those less familiar with the traditional style.
